This sumptuous pair of salon cabinets are what the French call meubles d’appui. Each is enclosed by a single glazed door and with canted sides. They are partie and contrepartie; that is to say that one is veneered in scarlet with bone marquetry whilst the other is veneered in bone with scarlet marquetry. The cut-out stencil of one thus forms the basis of the other. The frieze is set with pierced bronze panels, bone roundels and brackets: the base is veneered in scarlet and raised on ebonized and bronze claw and ball feet.
