The chairs of hand carved walnut in a folding slat design and set on curule legs. The wood carved with an intricate geometric design and featuring sporadic geometric inlays of shell and bone.
The crest rails of the chairs shaped, reminiscent of architectural elements, and carved with Arabic inscriptions. The slatted backsplats curved, following the shape of the back, joining the elegant curves of the curule from legs, forming a gracious “S” shaped silhouette. The seats comprised of slats that fold flat, providing a sturdy sitting surface.
These types of chairs are commonly referred to as “scribes” chairs. Folding for storage or easy transportation, it is assumed they were used by traveling scribes, providing a comfortable seat during long hours of transcription.
