Vintage Design
Tables like this were originally used as either an altar table for holding offerings to ancestors or placed underneath a family portrait and used as a general display table.
This elegant elm wood table was produced in Shanxi province mid 19th century in a simple ‘An’ style, with recessed, slightly splayed rounded legs fitting through a plain apron into the thick table top, with legs supported on each side with rounded double stretchers. There are also shaped braces fitted to the apron ends with nails for additional support, which is fairly unusual. The rich dark lacquer finish is original and largely intact with signs of wear around the feet and edges of the top surface,
Today this would make a lovely console with its narrow proportions, perfect for a hallway or reception room.
