This vintage smoking table or candle stand appears to be custom made and one of a kind. The heavy steel shaft is thickly chrome plated and rests upon a faux rosewood base complemented at the top by an offset faux rosewood table surface. Very modern and cubist in form the table was made in the mid-’70s and comes from a home decorated by Tommi Parzinger. While he custom made a number of pieces for the interior he also had other craftsmen and firms produce work for the house so we can not firmly attribute this to him but it as a number of features that can be associated with his work. The tight dynamic yet machine-like restraint of the metalwork, spare ornamentation, an architectural squareness to the presentation of form as well as the use of not expected materials such as lacquers or faux finishes are all similar to other works produced by him throughout his career. Best known for his many furniture and lighting designs Tommi Parzinger turned his hand to many areas of the design world and had a long and important career during the early development of modern design and continued to work until his death in 1981. His company closed it doors two years after his death. The faint checkered design shown in the photograph is a reflection of the tile floor it was photographed on.
