A large and impressive French 19th century life-size bust depicting Othello, the North African Moor of Venice character in the 1603 play written by William Shakespeare (1564-1616), after the model by Gaston Veuvenot Leroux (French, 1854-1942). The imposing figure of a black bearded male Moor, posing with a profile gaze, wearing a Fez hat and a loosely draped attire, raised on a square plinth with a plaque that reads ‘Othello’. Signed and dated on left shoulder: ‘Gaston Leroux, 1887’. Circa 1887.
Note: This model of Othello by Leroux was first presented at the Paris Salon in 1888.

In overall is good condition, some rubbing and losses to the patina, with a mild verde-green oxidation/patina peeling and wear consistent with use & age.
