Late 19th Century Shōdai Iron and Straw-Ash Glazed Jar

Shodai-yaki, is a style of high-iron Japanese stoneware that originated in the northern part of Kumamoto prefecture during the Edo-period. Shodai ware pieces are known for their bold shapes, simplicity, and rustic charm, embodying the beauty of nature in their organic forms and textures.

This medium-sized jar has wonderful “nagashi-kake” around the shoulder, where white-ash glaze has transformed in the kiln to freestyle lines of pale blue.
